yep. i remember this 'era' in Japan, 'The Rhinoceros Beetle Craze'. for years even before this episode aired in May 2004 boys in Japan caught wild beetles and raised them as pets. well, around 99-01 that 'craze' hit hard. till 2010 and even a bit further when the craze trickled down around 2015 it was the IT thing to buy and sell and try to home-raise rhino beetles. they were going for HUNDREDS of US dollars/in Yen of course... the rare ones with specific-colored eyes were the most expensive.

but there's one thing. it got so crazy that people were getting stabbed, beaten, and robbed of beetles in the woods. the poor lil insects were like Tickle Me Elmos, or Cabbage Patch Kids, or Beanie Babies... LOTS of illegal transactions were going on 'grey websites' etc. there were environmental activist groups in Japan PATROLLING ON THEIR OWN TIME in the woods to prevent beetle hunts from happening.

at one point the Japanese government itself had to step in and BAN wild beetle gathering! because the insects were GOING EXTINCT! rhino beetles have a year-long 'maturation period' where their eggs are buried by the mommy beetle underground and they pupate etc. then crawl up out of the dirt and feed and grow and mature and mate annnd suchforth.

well rhino beetles can live many years in captivity and quite a few years in the wild. but if you keep catching all the beetles... mhm! none will be left to 'get jiggy with it!' and make more wild beetles. as the scientist in this episode said, you have to control the temperature, humidity, and such of the humus the eggs are laid in for MONTHS before the young beetles will crawl outta the dirt. so home-raising beetles as a 'cash crop' wasn't easy.

of course, there were fake 'grow your own beetles for fun and profit' kits being sold online. at best you'd get a cheap aquarium, some suspicious dirt, a packet of 'eggs', and some photocopied instructions. you took the aquarium, filled it with the dirt, buried the 'eggs', moistened the dirt above the eggs with a small amount of water, and stuck the aquarium in a closet for a few months. you'd go in there once a week and 'water the eggs' and that was it. supposedly the rhino beetles would grow up and be wandering inside the aquarium as if by magic!

6:21, lol the detective boys bullying Takagi into doing things for them. 7:02, Conan is wearing a seatbelt! You know by now I'm conviced that Japanese cars just didn't have seatbelts in the backseats back then from what I've seen on Detective Conan, I'm gonna look it up. Ok, so seatbelts were mandated in Japan in September of 1985 and seatbelts were mandated for the backseat in 2008, but it seems not many follow this rule. I'm still gonna make fun of Conan not wearing his seatbelt, I want to see him get punted so bad. But, like, not in a malicious way or anything! I love Shinichi/Conan, but it'd be so satisfying to see, but also not at the same time cause I'd be worried about him. But also just like make him go through the windshield, make him wear his seatbelt. 8:11, Kogoro fanboy lol. 23:28, how did he get in there? 23:56, ironic.
